First Aid at Work [Equestrian industry] will provide delegates with a standard Highfield Awarding Body HSE First Aid at Work qualification. This course would cover the fully HSE syllabus, but there would be particular emphases on the issues that are likely to occur in an Equine environment e.g. spinal, head and other impact/crush injuries, fractures and dislocations, as well as Hypothermia, Exposure and Heat Exhaustion; beyond this we would look to tailored this course for your particular work environment.
‘First Aid at Work [Equestrian industry]’ is an advance level course suitable for employees who have been nominated as First-aiders for their workplace, to comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety Executive [HSE], where the workplace is classified as a ‘medium to high risk’ hazardous environment [*N.B. see below First Aid – Employers’ legal responsibility].
We offer specialised equine first aid courses for the equestrian industry. This includes bespoke versions our popular first aid courses. All courses adhere to HSE’s and first aid industry standards, with additional content modified to suit requirements for equine related injuries and risk. These include:
Crush injuries
Head and spinal injuries
‘Rider’ and ‘stable’ related injuries
Extreme body temperature
Instruction on correct first-aid equipment needed for equine first-aid.
In addition our trainers are all experienced around horses and understand the workings of a busy stable. Course format: This intensive course requires 18 hours ‘direct contact training’ [i.e. excluding breaks and lunch time]. It is usually delivered in a three six hour day format, but can also be delivered in other non-consecutive formats [although the sessions must be closely scheduled].
Course aims: This intensive introductory course will provide workplace First-aiders with a wide range of knowledge and skills to enable them to; assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, and to promptly provide effective emergency First Aid to a casualty [or casualties] to prevent the situation from worsening and promote recovery.
The course will follow the requirements of the Health and Safety Executive’s (First Aid) syllabus guidelines. Beyond this, we will always look to tailor the course to the most relevant requirements of your particular workplace. All participants will be provided with a First Aid Handbook and training pack and all the necessary course materials and training aids.
Throughout the course delegates will receive expert tutoring and in-depth training, with practical exercises, to enable them to understand, recognise and provide appropriate responses to a range of medical emergencies they might expect to encounter in their workplace.
Participants will learn a broad range of knowledge skills and procedures, which will enable them to stay safe and to know when they need to summon the Emergency Services, as well as knowing how to provide prompt and effective First Aid to a casualty [or casualties] following an injury or illness.
In particular, they will learn how to manage an unresponsive casualty and methods of resuscitation [CPR], choking, shock, wounds and bleeding, as well as understanding the signs of a range of important medical conditions, and will learn how to manage a range of minor and more serious injuries.
They will be taught how to use approved First Aid equipment and other materials to hand, as well as learning what is the appropriate contents of a first aid box, and the importance of recording/reporting accidents, incidents and near misses.
Understand the role of the workplace emergency First-aider.
Learn to assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency.
Learn to properly communicate with the casualty and how to conduct a primary and secondary survey.
Put an unconscious casualty into the recovery position and maintain an airway.
Carry out effective rescue breathing to current Resuscitation Council guidelines.
Carry out effective CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) and deploy an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) to current Resuscitation Council guidelines.
Recognise and deal with minor and major cases of bleeding.
Recognise and treat a patient suffering from medical shock and/or sudden poisoning.
Recognise and treat other key medical emergencies, including: asphyxia, asthma, burns and scalds, choking, crush, diabetes, dislocation and fractures, epilepsy/ seizures, eye injuries, fainting, head and chest injuries, heart conditions, poisons, severe allergic reaction (Anaphylaxis), spinal injuries, strains/sprains, bone injury, stroke and other work related accidents/illnesses.
Understand the correct contents of workplace First Aid Kits (and avoiding cross infection with the use of barriers) and the use of available First Aid equipment.
Understand the importance of the proper reporting and recording of incidents, accidents and/or near misses [RIDDOR].
Understand the duties of employers and the legal framework within which they operate.
Assessment and course certification: Following ongoing assessment by the tutor and having undergone a final appraisal by way of a formal assessment process, upon successful completion of the course each participant will receive a First Aid at Work Certificate, which is valid for three years from the date of issue.
First Aid at Work Certificate holders, who want to renew their certificate, without needing to undertake a full repeat 18 hour [3 day] course, can do so by attending an approved 2-day refresher course, before or close to the expiry date of their certificate.
Annual Refresher: Although the Health and Safety Executive [HSE] recognize the First Aid at Work course as being valid for three years, in terms of ‘best practice’ the HSE highly recommends First-aiders attend an annual re-fresher course.
Prerequisites: The only pre-conditions for delegates attending this course, are the delegates’ fitness to participate [see note below] and for them to have a keen interest in becoming a First-aider.
However, you may have previously undergone some form of elementary introductory First Aid. This is usually achieved by their having attended a (4 hour) Emergency Life Support course [sometimes referred to as an Appointed Person course] and/or the one day Emergency First Aid at Work course, or perhaps some basic online training.
Delegates placed on our courses must be free from any ailments, or conditions, or past injuries that will affect their ability to competently participate during the practical aspects of the course. Some parts of this course will involve a reasonable amount of physical effort and all participants will need to be capable of safely manoeuvring casualties at floor level [using the standard techniques, as guided by the course instructor].
If participants have any medical or health concerns that may affect their ability to take part in the course, they are advised to consult their doctor in advance to ensure they are fit enough to undertake this training [if in any doubt they must first discuss the matter with the instructor before commencement of the course].
We are always keen, where and when we can, to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate any particular Special Needs an individual may have. To enable us to properly provide reasonable adjustments to accommodate Special Needs, we will need 48 hours notification prior to the course commencing.
When the above course has been completed you will be able to go on to practice your first aid skills either by acting as a Workplace First-aider, and/or you might want to consider volunteering for one of the first aid societies [e.g. St John Ambulance, or St Andrew’s or British Red Cross] or perhaps by becoming a Community First Responder [these schemes are often run by your local Ambulance Service and/or one of the volunteer first aid societies].
First Person On Scene: Or maybe think about taking your training to the next level buy undertaking one of the specialist advanced first aid courses, such as the Royal College of Surgeons, First Person On Scene course, regulated by the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care. This is a well-recognised, 4 day program which will equip the candidate with the advanced skills and knowledge needed to provide life-saving interventions and the ability to stabilise a casualty until professional help arrives.
Advanced First-aider: Or maybe think about undertaking an Advanced First Aid course, which focuses on all aspects of first aid, but has the onus, on an increased understanding of anatomy and physiology as well as long term monitoring of the patient.
Wilderness [remote environment] First Aid: Or for those who have an interest in remote, or wilderness environments (where the protocols change due to the differences in likelihood of injury, probable severity of injury and complications associated with higher risk and increased time with the casualty) you might want to consider taking our [or one of the other] Wilderness/Remote Environment First Aid courses.
Typically these 4 day courses combine the First Aid at Work HSE syllabus, with a range of very hands on practical outdoor exercises and scenarios designed to simulate the remote/wilderness environments.
