Basic Life Support and Safe Use Of An Automated External Defibrillator [AED] is designed for first-aiders wishing to advance their knowledge and further develop their skills, and is particularly advised for first-aiders who have access to a defibrillator in the workplace.

Course format:  To enable delegates to achieve the best possible outcomes, this course is usually offered in a full day format. However, it can also be run in a half day format, as it has been agreed with the HSE that this qualification must have  a minimum contact time of 4 hours [this qualification has a minimum TQT value of 5 hours].

Course aims: This course is designed to expand a first-aiders knowledge, awareness and to instil greater confidence in the correct use of an AEDs. This course will also include other key emergency response topics such as:

  • Scene survey
  • Assess a casualty’s level of consciousness
  • How to open a casualty’s airways and check for breathing
  • Recovery position
  • CPR

Assessment and course certification: Following ongoing assessment by the tutor and having undergone a final appraisal by way of a formal assessment process, upon successful completion of the course each participant will receive a ‘Basic Life Support and Safe Use Of An Automated External Defibrillator’ Certificate. In line with industry guidance, after 3 years it is recommended that they sit the course again.
