Leeds
Leeds diverse history makes it hard to categorise, some would say its culture and nightlife is what makes the city so unique, others would argue it’s its people, or its history, others may just single out its football team.
Although all these things are true and all contribute to Leeds’ unique culture and vibrant atmosphere, no one should doubt Leeds’ stature as one of the leading players in the UK’s economy and growth, contributing over £18bn to the UK’s GVA; exceeded only by London, Manchester and Birmingham. Leeds is by far the largest centre of economic activity in Yorkshire and this is shown in its diverse economy built from a number of industries and sectors.
Leeds economy growing faster than London.
Manufacturing in and around Leeds makes up almost half of the UK’s manufacturing base. With around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees, making up 8.8% of total employment in the city. A large part of Leeds’ manufacturing base is built from food processing with some of the UKs biggest companies based in Leeds; including Tetley’s and Unilever. Although these large companies choose to be based in Leeds, in fact the majority of Leeds’ food processing industry is built from small to medium size companies, whose determination and quality shine through and thrive.
As well as food processing, Leeds’ diverse range of manufacturing activities include specialised engineering, print, chemicals and medical technology, overall generating 10.8% of Leeds’ total output of over £15 billion a year.
A hub for legal, service and financial sectors, Leeds has seen a notable growth in digital firms basing themselves within the city, contributing over 4bn to the UK economy.
As these industries continue to grow, it remains vitally important that management and staff are protected and educated in current HSE first aid industry standards and health and safety requirements.
